Florence Ballard (June 30, 1943 – February 22, 1976)

One of the founding members of the Motown group, the Supremes

The eighth of thirteen children, Ballard had a lifelong love of singing and auditioned for Motown Records in 1960

Selected the group name, “The Supremes” when they were accepted by Motown, though co-member, Diana Ross, feared that they would be mistaken for a male vocal group with that name

Expressed disappointment with Motown and their producers’ forcing Diana Ross into the spotlight as the star of the group, thus destroying the group’s dynamic

Struggled with depression and alcoholism and was eventually forced out of the group

Her solo career was unsuccessful and she faced domestic abuse, divorce, and money troubles in personal life

She died of cardiac arrest at the age of 32, never regaining her fame as a singer
